Last weekend I finally had an opportunity to explore Southern Thailand. We had a long weekend for Thai Constitution Day, so my friends and I headed to Krabi to enjoy a weekend on the beach. We stayed in Krabi Town, the capital of Krabi Province and a cute little town on the Andaman Coast.
We arrived on Friday night and spent the evening walking around the walking street night market and listening to (questionable) karaoke. The real fun started on Saturday when we took a ferry (one of the beautiful, wooden longboats common in the south) to Railay beach. Railay beach is technically on the mainland in Krabi, but it is surrounded by rocky cliffs and is therefore only accessible by boat. I have never seen a more picturesque beach. The water was teal blue and clear and warm, there were longboats stationed near beautiful cliffs, and islands could be seen in the distance. There are three beaches on Railay. We arrived at the pier on the East beach, and we spent most of the day soaking up the sun on the more popular, Railay West beach. We also spent a few hours on Pranang beach, which is surrounded by steep cliffs and the climbers brave enough to attempt climbing them.
After our day of relaxation, we decided to be a bit more adventurous on Sunday. We took a boat tour to Koh Hong Island where we kayaked around the shore. Koh Hong translates to “room island” because the island is named for the beautiful, shallow lagoon located in the center. Then we proceeded on to Loh Kha Island for snorkeling. It was my first time ever snorkeling and I wish I had an underwater camera to have captured the coral and the amazing rainbow fish swimming around!
Perhaps the most memorable part of the trip was the breathtaking sunset we watched on the boat ride back to dinner.
P.S. At dinner we got to watch a fire dance performance. It was pretty neat.
