An hour and a half drive southwest of the city of Chiang Mai (or a 40 minute motorbike ride from my apartment in Sanpatong) is Mae Wang National Park. A relatively small area pretty far off the beaten track, Mae Wang National Park is known for the beautiful rock formations that were formed millions of years ago by the Ping River, before it changed course. The most famous is Pha Chor, a set of bright yellow/orange, vertical cliffs. A few more kilometers into the park is Kiw Sur Ten, another set of vertical cliffs that aren’t quite as visually striking as Pha Chor, but are accompanied by a hike that leads to beautiful landscape views of the surrounding hills and the mountains of Chiang Mai in the distance.
