Malacca, in Southwestern Malaysia, is a designated World Heritage City. The streets are lined with colonial buildings and ancient structures, and an even mix of Chinese and Malay cultures shape the city. After a long day of traveling, I was tired when I arrived in Malacca, but it was Sunday, the last day of the Jonker Walk Weekend Market, so I walked to the crowded street anyway. It was definitely worth it. In Asia, I often try food without knowing what it is, and it’s usually hit or miss. At Jonker Walk, I tried three different local snacks without knowing what they were, and they were all delicious. That never happens, so I was very excited.
Welcome to Malacca! Jonker Walk. More people. Nyongya banana leaf treats! Local Nyongya food that looks disgusting and tasted delicious! It’s pork and rice and probably other things too. Radish rolls maybe? They were fried, so that’s like impossible to not taste good. Food street! Puts Piring: a delicious, melt in your mouth, coconut and sugary dessert.
I spent a few days wandering the old streets of Malacca (I’m talking like 27,000 steps per day wandering). Walking by the canal, admiring street murals, visiting Chinese temples, stopping by mosques (like the floating Masjid Sultan!), seeing centuries old Christian churches from Portuguese rule, and checking out local museums (like the very off-putting Malaysian Prison Museum) and art galleries (like one featuring paintings by the mayor). I also did a lot of food sampling, of course. It was a laid back, quiet city with friendly people and good vibes.
Corner shop. The pretty canal. Historical Chrstian church. He’s watching EVERYONE. Creepy skulls on old graves in an old church. These tiger paintings were everywhere and I’m a big fan. Wandering the streets. So deep, bro. I love the ornate ceilings of Chinese temples. There was a cute dog in this shop. A little different than street corners at home. PaNoRaMa. Abandoned building #1 Abandoned building #2 Abandoned building #3 Mural of Malay Women. Prince of Persia? Delicious laksa! I should’ve taken a photo in this flower tunnel. It would’ve been very instagrammable. The required attire for entering the mosque. Masjid Sultan
Who is the guy who is watching EVERYONE? And it looks like he only has 1 hand?
